Summit Objectives

The Canadian Outdoor Summit is an epic, national, historic project enabling the creation of a more unified, national outdoor community and remove roadblocks currently affecting outdoor programming.

The overarching goal of the Summit is to accelerate the transformation required for Led Outdoor Activities to thrive. It is doing so by:

  • Increasing awareness through information sharing, knowledge development, idea evaluation, and resource identification;
  • Increasing alignment through consensus building, affinity grouping, and community connection;
  • Promoting action through ideation, problem-solving, and collective action.

Specifically, the Summit has the following key objectives.

Develop a consensus statement about the value of Led Outdoor Activity in Canada.

Having a statement that demonstrates the value of Led Outdoor Activity will give a powerful tool to outdoor programs. When you will speak to the benefits you bring, you will be backed by an entire sector. This statement will be useful to advocate for increased investment in the sector and make it easier to attract participants.

Synthetize accepted practices, structures, and systems related to running an outdoor program in Canada.

Having a set of accepted practices showcasing how Led Outdoor Activities have been provided for decades will enable the competency, professionalism and due diligence of your organization to be recognized. Next time an unfortunate accident happens outdoors, our sector will be able to respond effectively. It will be easier to inform the public and stakeholders about how their safety is taken seriously.

Create a national framework of competency training for outdoor leaders

Having a functioning framework will give your unique set of skills the recognition it deserves and help identify if a person is ready to bring a group outdoors. A functioning framework will promote workforce mobility, access to outdoor training, and make it easier to demonstrate due diligence. The goal of this framework is not to create new certification requirements. It is to structure what already exists and increase coherence within the outdoor sector.

Support the development of learning outside in k-12 institutions.

Learning outside, no matter the pedagogy chosen, brings numerous benefits. The Summit will help better understand the barriers hindering schools from bringing students outside. In parallel to this understanding, the Summit is a platform for our community to coordinate the multiple efforts aimed at bringing outdoor education to schools in the country. Working together as a sector will make it more likely that our knowledge and expertise is leveraged to increase the number of outdoor programs in schools.

Indigenous perspectives on Led Outdoor Activity.

Being on the land has a long tradition on this continent. Creating a future where Led Outdoor Activities can thrive also means creating a reality where going outside represents more than one story, more than one worldview. The Summit is a project where Indigenous worldviews can take a more central place in defining the future of going outdoors in Canada.

Promote greater access to the outdoors for individuals with differing mobility.

Creating a reality where Led Outdoor Activities bring benefits to the greatest number of Canadians possible means that programs must be ready to provide meaningful experiences to individuals of all abilities. Through this objective, tools increasing the capacity for outdoor programs to bring individuals with differing mobility will be developed and shared.

Increase capacity for inclusion for 2SLGBTQ2 in outdoor programs

By this objective, outdoor programs will increase their ability to be inclusive of individuals of all sexual orientations and gender identities. Through this objective, you will gain access to tools, knowledge, and resources enabling your program to create a sense of belonging for individuals who identify as part of the 2SLGBTQ2 community.

* (2SLGBTQ2 stands for 2 spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning)

Design an Anti-racism plan for the national outdoor community

A framework for a five-year plan aimed at dismantling structures reinforcing racial inequity will be developed. This plan will allow the outdoor sector to increase diversity for staff and participants alike.
