The future of the outdoor
community is in our hands.
Sept.29 – Oct.02, 2020
The Canadian Outdoor Summit is focussed on people and the formal and informal communities that they belong to. These engage with the outdoor space through a broad range of educational, wellness, social and experiential activities. The Summit is primarily focussed on the social sustainability domain.
The Parks-For-All process is focussed on the outdoor place and provides guidance on the human relationship with that place. It is a place where the environmental and social sustainability domains intersect and, ideally, support each other.
The vision and strategic directions articulated in the Parks for All action plan define the ethical and functional context within which the outdoor education and activity community seeks to execute its diverse crafts within the outdoor space (not just parks).
A healthy parks system requires the Canadian public to be strongly connected to the outdoor. While Canadians feel positive about being in nature, few engage with outdoor activities. The Outdoor Summit will provide the means to reverse this trend by finding solutions to the structural and cultural barriers that prevent Canadians from developing healthy and caring relationships with natural spaces.
Outdoor education and activity provide personal, social, and economic benefits which go beyond parks, these include:
Outdoor activities also take place in urban and altered outdoor environments. Active transportation is an example.
Outdoor education and activity builds healthy bodies and healthy minds.
Outdoor activity can be a powerful tool to promote ‘active for life’ strategies and reverse the trend of declining activity levels.
Outdoor education encompasses improved delivery of a diversity of academic subjects
Quality outdoor programming improves social and leadership skills, improves mental health and promotes global citizenship.
Adventure therapy can be a powerful approach leading to lasting benefits.
Outdoor activity is an important economic contributor through the tourism, manufacturing and retail sectors.
There are a lot of pre-Summit projects and workgroups that would benefit greatly from your talents and ideas as well as access to your networks. We are now seeking passionate individuals and organizations who can commit some time to being part of this unprecedented national collaboration. We will need both funding and people who can commit time to work on various projects as volunteers.
